Tinolla Rodgers, Owner of African Monarch Lodges
Families must go there to learn why they belong together on this earth, adolescents to discover humility, lovers to plumb old but untried wells of passion, honeymooners to seal marriages with a shared sense of bafflement, those shopworn with life to find a tonic for futility, the aged to recognise a symmetry to twilight. I know this all sounds a bit much, but if I have ever seen magic, it has been in Africa.”
John Hemingway
Bwabwata National Park, where African Monarch Lodges is located, is home to The Big Four (elephants, lions, leopards, buffalos) as well as plenty of other impressive wildlife. While we don’t have rhinos in this area, there are around 3,000 elephants – many of them often right underneath Nambwa Tented Lodge’s treetop suites. The park is also home to giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, crocodiles, hippos, ostriches, wild dogs, hyenas, warthogs, and plenty of different kinds of buck such as eland, kudu, lechwe, sitatunga and sable.
During boat trips on the Kwando River, you are guaranteed to get up close and personal with bathing hippos – a thrilling experience!
This is bird-watcher’s paradise, with more than 450 bird species in the park and surrounds. These include the Southern Carmine Bee-eater, Black-winged Pratincole, Slaty Egret, Wattled Crane, Western Banded Snake Eagle, African Skimmer, White-backed Night Heron, and Dickinson’s Kestrel.
Absolutely, we cater to families with kids. We even offer tailored packages for kids on safari, featuring fun and educational activities (including camping in the wild!) to keep you and the little ones busy and entertained. Please see our Kids on Safari activity for more information.
Our guides are extremely professional and skilled, so there’s no need to worry while on a game drive or a guided bush walk. They regularly scout the area before taking guests out and remain in communication with each other via walkie talkies, ensuring they always have eyes on the wildlife.
At African Monarch Lodges, we have wildlife roaming the area year round. However, if you specifically want to see large herds of elephants, it’s best to come from June to November, before the rainy season, which is when they begin their migration to Angola.

The little panhandle above Botswana, where African Monarch Lodges is located, is like a country in itself. It’s unlike the rest of Namibia – it’s green with lots of vegetation. Plus, we are fortunate to be situated on the banks of the Kwando River, and amidst the floodplains, creating a lush green wilderness.
Namibia is one of the safest destinations for African safari travel. And any guest who visits African Monarch Lodges is extremely well looked after. We consider you part of our family. We will arrange airport transfers, so there’s no need to worry about getting to and from our lodges.
Although there is a risk of malaria in the Zambezi Region, insect repellent containing DEET and mosquito nets over the beds are very helpful in deterring mosquitoes. However, should you wish to take additional precautions and use anti-malarial prophylactics, consult your doctor for advice at least three weeks before departure to Africa.
