OVERVIEW

Join Annemarie for this five-day retreat that helps unleash creative blocks to help tease out the story inside.

Whether you’ve always wanted to write but don’t know where to begin, or you’re an already accomplished writer looking for fresh inspiration and a bit of headspace away from the day-to-day chaos, this retreat is for you.

The natural romance of the wild African bush might alone be enough to inspire the words to pour onto the page. But we’ll also explore our inner world through yoga, meditation and breathwork to tap into and work with emotions that can transform your creative writing.

In the beauty of the untouched wilderness at African Monarch Lodges, let your heart open, the words flow, and your characters breathe through you.

“Writing is easy. All you have to do is sit down at the typewriter and bleed.”

Ernest Hemingway

What to Expect at the Writing & Yoga Retreat…

  • Daily sunrise yoga sessions. These will include meditation and breathwork. They will be themed to go hand in hand with the writing workshops – they’re designed to get the creative juices flowing.
  • Daily writing workshops, drawing on the themes explored in the yoga sessions as well as working through practical techniques and tips for structuring a book, defining characters and plot. Not writing a book? That’s okay – there’s plenty of inspiration for you to create whatever story or poetry or any other kind of writing you want to focus on. We’ll also cover tips on blog and article writing.
  • Structured writing time (4 hours per day, broken up into two sessions) during which you’ll aim to write approximately 2,000 words per day. Some might write more or less, but the goal is to reach around 10,000 words by the end of the retreat. This could make up your first three chapters, should you be working on a book. You are also, of course, welcome to use any downtime hours to keep writing!
  • Group feedback sessions where we’ll offer constructive feedback to inspire and motivate each other
  • Connection with nature – various activities designed to get us in touch and grounded, such as forest bathing and sound journeys

ALL RETREATS INCLUDE
  • Accommodation at Nambwa Tented Lodge. These luxurious suites are nestled high amongst the tree canopies. The luxurious suites emanate a sense of serenity and allow each of us some privacy and comfort for the duration of our time together.
  • Morning or afternoon game drives. Discover the unknown along meandering tracks within the Bwabwata National Park, ideally located within the largest conservation area in Africa. Our guides find the perfect spot to disembark and set up the morning coffee or sundowner refreshments in true legendary African Monarch Lodges style.
  • Morning or afternoon boat cruise. Our guides will steer you past varied landscapes of papyrus islands and reed floodplains and get within a respectful distance of hippos, crocodiles, other mammals, and the varied bird species this area is known for. This informative, yet soulful experience on the Kwando Rivers’ waterways is similar to that of the Okavango Delta.
  • Bush walks. An incredible way to experience the bush in a more personal and energetic way. Our local guides take great delight in sharing their ancestral repertoire of medicinal uses of the flora along the way and their tales of the wild and their upbringing in this area. It is an experience that connects and grounds us to the earth.
  • Sundowner setup at the famous Horseshoe Lagoon, served with fresh, homemade, healthy fruit snacks whilst sitting barefoot in the sand soaking up breathtaking sunsets alongside hippos and herds of elephants.
  • Bush dinner on a private island. There is nothing quite like savouring a meal in the serenity of nature with a symphony of night sounds while breathing in the earth, the trees and the energy of a warming fire.
  • Expressive art experience at The Sijwa Project
  • Bwabwata National Park fees and Sustainability levies

Not Included:  Your flights to and from Namibia, and transfers to Nambwa from nearby airports

Meet Your Facilitator

A writer by passion and profession, Annemarie has more than two decades’ experience working as a writer and editor in London, Cape Town and Tokyo. She’s worked as a writer and editor for magazines including Men’s Health, Marie Claire, Rolling Stone and Time Out Tokyo, and as a copywriter and strategist for brands globally. Her first novel was published in 2018, and her second is in its final editing stage.

Annemarie is also a kundalini yoga instructor, having fallen in love with this style of yoga during a particularly challenging period in her life. She credits the practice, which combines movement, breathwork, meditation and mindfulness, with helping her shift into an entirely new way of being.

Understanding that life’s chaos can dim our creative flow, she brings her two passions – writing and yoga – together, in a way that both balances and ignites our emotions, inspiration and energy.

FREQUENT QUESTIONS
  • Do I Need Experience in Yoga, Meditation or Writing to Attend the Writing & Yoga Retreat?
No experience is necessary. All activities and workshops are designed to cater towards any level. This is a small group so you’ll receive plenty of individual guidance too.

  • What Kind of Yoga Equipment Do I Need to Bring?

There is no need to bring a yoga mat or yoga cushions. These will be provided by the lodge. Please bring comfortable and light clothes that allow for easy body movements.

  • Is Kundalini Yoga Based on Any Religion?

No, not at all. Although this form of yoga has roots in Hinduism, our practice is secular and aimed at combining movement, breathwork, and meditation to balance body and mind. Also note that there will be a bigger focus on writing than yoga during this retreat; the yoga is a tool to get our creative juices flowing.

  • In What Language Will the Writing Retreat Be Held?

The retreat will be offered in English.
